How to Use Database

The "Research Information and data Access Site of TEAMS (RIAS)" is a portal to the data obtained in the "Tohoku Ecosystem-associated Marine Sciences (TEAMS)" project. Users can search and browse the data by using RIAS.

1. Main screen layout and function

  1. Main screen layout

    The "Data Tree" located on the left side helps users to narrow down the data entries by choosing pre-defined hierarchical categories. The "Data List" located on the right side shows the list of data entries fitting the selected category in the Data Tree. The "Map View" and "Time Line View" are shown in the "Map/Schedule" tab.

  2. Data Tree

    All the classification categories are located under the "All Data" folder in the Data Tree. Under a category in the Data Tree relevant sub-categories are shown. By selecting a sub-category users can refine the selection.
    The figure after a category shows the number of data entries classified under the category.


  3. Data List

    The list of data entries relevant to the selected category in the Data Tree are shown in the Data List. In the Data List there are "Title", "Data Description", "Period", and "Sum nail" of each data entry. Clicking the title the information page of the data appears. Clicking "Map/Schedule" the area and the period of the data are shown.


  4. Map/Schedule

    In the "Map/Schedule" tab a map of the research areas and the time line of the research periods which are relevant to the selected data entries are shown. Data without latitude/longitude or period is not shown.
    Zooming up/down , and pan on the map are available by a mouse or buttons on upper left corner of the map .

2. Search by keywords

The full-text search is available by entering keywords in the "Search Box" at the upper right of the window. Please refer the samples below.

  1. To refine your search

    Type of search Example Instructions
    AND [MIYAGI IWATE] Enter space between the keywords. The search engine will search for data that includes all of the keywords you have entered. In this example, the search engine will find data that includes MIYAGI and IWATE.

3. Advanced search

>For advanced search press "advanced search" below the search box and advanced search window will appears. In this window users can search for data from the all entries by classification information, AND retrieval (entries including ALL the keywords are hit), OR retrieval (entries including ANY keywords are hit), NOT retrieval (entries not including the keywords are hit), specification of data types, area retrieval on the map, or period retrieval on the time line.
Press "search" button at the bottom of the windows and search results will appear. "clear" button clears the criteria.

  2. Conditions of keyword

    Type of search Example Instructions
    AND/OR 『MIYAGI IWATE』 Enter space between the keywords. The search engine will search for data that includes all or any of the keywords you have entered. In this example, the search engine will find data that includes MIYAGI or IWATE.


  3. Search conditions

    Users can add criteria by selecting data items from the "Condition Other Keyword" and pressing "Add". "Delete" removes the criteria. "Clear" initializes the all criteria.


  4. Map/Schedule

    Users can search for data from the map or time line. Specify the area / period on the map / time line by "polygon" button . Single click adds a point to the area and double click ends area specification. "Clear" button clears the area.

4. Search result

There are classification tree and data list in the search result window.

    The number of entries hit the search appears in the data tree. The number of all entries hit the search appears after the category "All Data" and the number of entries relevant to the each category appears after the category.
    Users can narrow down the search results by clicking the categories or sub-categories.


  3. Data list in the search result

    The list of entries hit the search appear in the data list of the search result window. This list shows the titles, sum nails, snippets (short text including the keyword) and highlighted keyword. The title of the data links to the relevant data page showing information about the data set.

5. Data Download

Users can download the data set by clicking the link at the "File" in "Data Download" section in the data page.

6. Display options

  1. Switching of metadata display

    Contents appearing in the data page can be changed by clicking "SIMPLE VIEW" or "DETAIL VIEW". Detail view shows additional information such as related sites, data manager, and contact.


  2. Language

    "English" or "Japanese" buttons at the top of the window change the language of the window.


  3. Display records

    In initial state 20 items appear in a window. Users can proceed to the next 20 items by the arrow > at the bottom of the window. The number of items in a window can be changed by selecting the "display records" .
